Stripped Benefits: What You Lose Buying DVC Resale in 2026

Since 2019, Disney has restricted certain benefits for DVC members who purchase on the resale market. Understanding exactly what you lose—and more importantly, what you keep—is essential before buying resale in 2026.

The 2019 Restriction Policy

In January 2019, Disney announced that points purchased through resale would no longer be eligible for certain "member extras." These restrictions apply only to points bought resale after the policy date—grandfathered points from earlier purchases retain full benefits.

Importantly, if you own any direct-purchase points (even a small contract), those points unlock full benefits for your entire membership.

What You Lose with Resale Points

Disney Collection Access

Resale points cannot be used at Disney Collection properties, which include:

  • Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa (Hawaii)
  • Disney's Vero Beach Resort (Florida)
  • Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort (South Carolina)

Note: If your home resort IS one of these properties, you can use your resale points there at the 11-month window. You just can't use resale points from other resorts to book these locations.

Concierge Collection

The Concierge Collection offers premium experiences that resale points cannot access:

  • Adventures by Disney trips
  • Disney Cruise Line staterooms
  • Premium resort experiences

Annual Pass Discounts

DVC members with direct points receive discounts on Walt Disney World Annual Passes. Resale-only members pay full price for passes. In 2026, this discount can save $100-200 depending on pass type.

Member Cruise Benefits

Special DVC member benefits on Disney Cruise Line require direct points. Resale members can still book cruises—just without the member-specific perks.

What You KEEP with Resale Points

Here's the good news—resale points retain all the core benefits that most members actually use:

Benefit Direct Purchase Resale Purchase
Home Resort 11-Month Booking
7-Month Window (All Resorts*)
Point Banking & Borrowing
Room Discounts (Cash)
DVC Member Lounge (EPCOT)
Dining/Merchandise Discounts
Disney Collection (Aulani, Vero, HHI)**
Concierge Collection (Cruises, etc.)
Annual Pass Discount
Member Cruise Benefits

*Riviera resale points restricted to Riviera only at 7-month window
**Resale owners CAN use points at their own home resort if it is a Disney Collection property

Home Resort Priority

Book at your home resort 11 months in advance, exactly like direct buyers. This is the most valuable DVC benefit, and resale points have full access.

7-Month Booking Window

At the 7-month mark, book at any DVC resort (except restrictions on Riviera for resale buyers). This flexibility makes DVC ownership versatile.

Room Discounts

Cash room discounts at Disney-owned hotels remain available to all DVC members. These discounts can be significant during slower periods.

Dining and Shopping Discounts

Member discounts at select restaurants and merchandise locations continue for resale owners. Tables in Wonderland eligibility remains as well.

DVC Member Lounge

Access to the EPCOT DVC Member Lounge is available to all members, regardless of how points were purchased.

Point Banking and Borrowing

Full flexibility to bank unused points or borrow from future years applies equally to resale ownership.

The Riviera Exception

Disney's Riviera Resort has additional restrictions. Points purchased resale at Riviera can ONLY be used at Riviera—not at other DVC resorts during the 7-month window. This makes Riviera resale essentially a "Riviera-only" membership.

If you want Riviera and flexibility, buying direct is essentially required. If you only care about staying at Riviera, resale works fine.

Do the Restrictions Matter?

For most buyers, honestly assess: How often will you use Aulani, Hilton Head, or Vero Beach? Will you book Disney Cruises with points? Do you buy Annual Passes?

If your primary goal is vacationing at Walt Disney World resorts, resale points deliver 95% of the value at 50% of the cost. The stripped benefits, while annoying in principle, rarely impact day-to-day membership enjoyment.

The money saved buying resale can fund actual vacations—park tickets, dining, experiences—rather than paying a premium for benefits you may never use.

The Hybrid Strategy

Some buyers purchase a small direct contract (100-150 points minimum) to unlock all benefits, then add resale points for additional capacity. This provides full access to everything while minimizing cost. It's worth considering if the restricted benefits genuinely matter to your family's vacation style.
